Fun - Family Event @ Discovery Green. Saturday, July 13th from 5:00pm. Don't miss it!!!

On Saturday, July 13th 2013 Jagannath Ratha-yatra or "Festival of Chariots", which originated thousands of years ago in Puri, India, will be celebrated at Discovery Green beginning at 5:00 p.m. The festival begins with a yoga meltdown, followed by a traditional East Indian chariot parade, multicultural entertainment featuring the popular Mayapuris drum and kirtan ensemble from Alachua, Florida, and a free vegan feast.

Co-sponsored by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) of Houston and Char Dhama Hindu Temple of the Woodlands, the parade will spotlight three authentic hand-pulled wooden chariots that were crafted in India under the direction of Mr.Surya Sahoo of SKAI Foundation. According to ISKCON outreach coordinator Dr. Hansa Medley, the parade will be the first of its kind to be celebrated on a grand scale in Houston as it is traditionally done in India with three chariots. ISKCON has entered a single chariot in the Art Car Parade several times, but never three chariots at once in Houston. According to Dr. Medley, festival-goers can help pull the chariots, get henna designs, learn about bhakti yoga, mantra meditation, vegetarian cooking classes and more. The event is free and open to the public.
